Historical Weapons

Swords were one of the most important weapons ancient soldiers possessed but not the only weapon. When swords were not available to these fearless warriors, they often relied on secondary weapons like the axe, spear, crossbow, pole axe, war hammer, mace and flail. If battle was too close for sword use (or a sword was unavailable due to being lost or broken), these secondary historical weapons allowed fighting to continue. And, depending upon the weapons selected, the more skilled warrior could suddenly have a distinct advantage over his opponent.

Now you can choose from a wide range of intriguing weapons available to you on–line in a fascinating and exciting variety of designs. Perfect for home décor in Medieval themed rooms (media room, family area, or kid's bedroom), and also make unique gifts for the man who has everything.

Historical weapons in our collection include:

MaceMace

The mace is a secondary weapon used by knights in the event a knight's sword was lost, broken, or if battle was too close for swordplay. It consisted of a club (stick) with a distinctive flanged head. Initial wooden shafts were abandoned after 1540 as steel shafts became more dominant.

This historical weapon is a definite attention getter and fun to display as a home decoration. (Perfect in a Medieval Media room!)

FlailFlail

Cousin to the mace, a flail was primarily used by infantrymen more than knights.

The traditional flail design includes a club (stick) with a short chain and spiked ball on the end of the chain.

Many styles were eventually given names like Morning Star or Holy Water Sprinkler... demonstrating a humorous poke at Medieval church leaders.

AxeAxes

Even though the axe actually dates back to the stone age, it was made famous as a historic weapon by the Anglo-Saxons, Franks and Vikings. The 15th & 16th century axes often had hammer heads or a pick on the back of the blade.

War hammers are another type of secondary weapon used by ancient warriors. Its design is very similar to an axe, but the war hammer uses a hammerhead instead of an axe-blade as the primary functional end. Pike, Pole Axe & HalberdPike, Pole Axe & Halberd

The Swiss are known as masters of pole arms like the pike, pole axe and halberd, and still use them in formal ceremonies. The fame and reverence of pole arms was launched when a small group of peasants used them to slaughter an army of knights (in full armor) who were immobilized in swamp mire – now perfect home décor for Medieval themed rooms.

Spears were not just for throwing. Many Medieval cultures trained their warriors on how to use a spear as a far-reaching thrusting weapon. The Romans were very innovative and modified pilum (spears) to be weighted with long metal head-shafts that bent upon impact making them useless if picked up.
