French Shako Helmet

This striking French Shako Helmet is a beautiful European helmet historically designed after the originals. Initially, the shako helmet was a tall, cylindrical military helmet tapering towards the top. The front of a shako is adorned with varying ornamental badges (metal plates), and often crowned with a plume, pompom, or feather attached at the top.

Starting about 1800, the shako became a widespread military helmet for many armies and were made of felt (or cloth) over a leather hat-form. Unfortunately, this design was found to be heavier, clumsy in the field, and did not provide protection against enemy fire or the weather.

After the Napoleonic Wars (1815), the shako helmet was retired to serve as a showy headdress for the European army. Over the years as elaborate and colorful traditional uniforms were used, the designs of shako helmets varied widely from army to army in height, color, trim, and profile.
