Comb Morion Conquistador Helmet
In the 16th century, the Morion (or Comb Morion) was developed as a new style of helmet which evolved from the earlier cabasset helmet. This helm was very distinguishable with an almond-shaped, dome design with a broad brim turning upwards at the front and back. The top of the morion has a raised metal crest (comb) and colored feather plumes were often added.
Most commonly associated with Spanish Conquistador armor. (Conquistador Helmet), this style of helmet was widely adopted by the British (during the reigns of Edward VI), Switzerland, and many others. The simple design of the comb morion made it very inexpensive to manufacture, and it quickly spread across Europe as a foot soldier helmet by many countries.
You can still find the morion as part of the dress uniform of the Swiss Guard at the Vatican, as well as in other countries during various parades. Some of the more common names for this unique helmet, include:
- Morion
- Comb Morion
- Conquistador Helmet
- European Comb Morion Helm
- Spanish Morion helmet
- Swiss Morion helmet
- Pikemen Morion helmet
- Musketeer Morion helmet
