This German designed side sword was popular in the Renaissance period (16th, 17th century) as both a civilian and military sword. The relatively light weight and quickness of this design created wide-spread appeal. This short sword is most noted for its ability to cut efficiently as well as thrust over its contemporary, the rapier.
