Viking Swords And Daggers: Extremely Rare Artifacts

Only a small amount of Viking era armament has survived in good condition through the ages. As well, little information is available on Viking arms and armor and how they were used because Vikings buried their swords, helmets and armor in the ground with dead warriors. Being exposed to soil over time completely destroyed these weapons. Today, only about 1000 artifacts survive in major museums around the world.

Vikings originated in Scandinavia and were known as some of the most fierce warriors of all time. As master raiders, they were known for their swift attacks (or "raids"). Quickly ending raids with the same speed in which they attacked ensured a safe exit for the Vikings before a counter-attack could be organized.

"War for profit" was the primary means of support for the Vikings, and a warrior's sword was critical to his success (and survival). But swords were expensive, rare and hard to make with primitive swordsmithing skills. Highly prized, swords were kept within the family generation after generation. As a warrior died, his sword was passed down to the next able warrior in the family.

Overall, most swords in the Viking age had simple designs, were double-edged and single-handed. A large dagger (sax, or short sword) had a broad curved blade with acute points and varied overall lengths. The hilt was often a horn or wood covered extension of the blade. Interestingly, the "sax" survived through the Middle Ages as the falchion, and later evolved into the modern saber.
